Life is an adventure! Especially when we walked around Devil’s Tower and around the boulder field. The boulder field was the true star of my day! I wanted my dad to go into the pool with us that night, so I promised him that I would climb the boulder field with him if he got into the pool. He promised he would so I went. So you might be thinking, stepping on rocks? Not a big deal. Well, I was scared of it, because there were loose rocks, you could lose your footing, and sometimes you could hurt yourself. But seeing the people climbing Devil’s Tower which was probably straight, gave me a little courage. While climbing, I took slow and careful steps while Jasmine rushed forward, meanwhile getting a couple scratches. When I got to the top, I was perfectly un-scratched, which I was proud of. Jasmine was definitely not happy when we came to a sign that said, “If you step behind this post, you will have to pay $125.” So to make a joke, we all stepped behind it and said, “Oops, there are three of us so we have to pay $375,” which we didn’t pay. The way down I felt more comfortable, even though everyone still called me a chicken little, which I suppose I am. My mom should have been called that. She didn’t even step one step off the trail. We were all tired and we went back to the RV.
Mount Rushmore! Why must you trick us? Disappointing was what Mt. Rushmore was. Disappointing, I was almost angry with it! Why were the faces so small?! They looked way smaller than in the pictures. Soon, I found out that we were too far from them. I was relieved when a park ranger told us we could go closer, way closer so they would not seem so small. We kind of tagged along a tour, and learned that this guy called Gutzon Borglum was the one who sculpted the presidents. One of the most fascinating facts was that more than ninety percent of the sculpture was by dynamite! Even though it still took fourteen years to complete it. I couldn’t wait for the lighting ceremony tonight.
Walking in the dark? Not so fun. But I wanted to see the lightening ceremony. There was a show about how important the presidents were. Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. I waited for the lighting up of the presidents. We sang the national anthem and waited. Then all of a sudden the presidents’ faces started glowing. No one in my family knew how they did it, or what they did it with but we all knew it was cool and we were so lucky to see the famous Mount Rushmore. I was happy, delighted, and satisfied when we went back.
